Would BarCamp work as ChurchCamp
This last weekend I was lucky enough to get on the list to attend BarCampLondon which was held at the Yahoo! office in London. It’s not a booze up like it sounds (though there was beer .. and too few openers). My thoughts and a more detailed explaination follow.
The concept behind BarCamp is as follows:
COMMUNITY AND INFORMATION
BarCamp is an ad-hoc un-conference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees.Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. When you come, be prepared to share with barcampers. When you leave, be prepared to share it with the world.NO SPECTATORS, ONLY PARTICIPANTS
Attendees must give a demo, a session, or help with one, or otherwise volunteer / contribute in some way to support the event. All presentations are scheduled the day they happen. Prepare in advance, but come early to get a slot on the wall. The people present at the event will select the demos or presentations they want to see.Presenters are responsible for making sure that notes/slides/audio/video of their presentations are published on the web for the benefit of all and those who can’t be present.
I really enjoyed it and although this has grown out of the tech scene there has been some cross-overs into other areas and I’ve been thinking about the format for a Christian gathering. It would involve using a building with a few “spaces” that people can dive into for different sessions. You only come if your willing to speak or lead a discussion about something you care about. I’m too busy to organise one right now but maybe early next year… I think I know a few people who could spread the word on it and get a decent turnout.
